Scalability to meet uncertain data growth

Buy only what you need today for backup and archive, and then expand the library for higher capacity and performance as your data grows.

The HPE ESL G3 Tape Library provides a modular architecture in a standard 19" rack form factor to scale up over 50x from the initial capacity without disrupting ongoing performance and delivery; it is scalable from 100 to over 12,006 slots up to 180 PB in increments of 100 slots.

The library configuration can accommodate:

  • 1 control module
  • 0 to 15 expansion modules or high density expansion modules.
  • 100 to 12,006 possible cartridges slots maximum
  • 1 to 192 LTO-7Ultrium Tape Drives

The HPE StoreEver ESL G3 Tape Libraries offer two different expansion modules to best suit your data protection and/or archiving needs.

Expansion Module Options

Slots

Drives

ESL G3 Expansion Module

Each expansion module has 456 storage slots

1-24 tape drives can be installed into an Expansion
*Available storage slots will reduce as drives are added

ESL G3 High-Density Expansion Module

Each HD-EM provides a slot only upgrade. Each HD-EM has 780 storage slots

No tape drives can be installed into a High-Density Expansion Module

NOTE: Adding extra drives reduces the total slot count unless Expansion Modules and/or Capacity Upgrade Licenses are added. The ESL G3 is designed for easy scalability to meet a variety of needs, and your Hewlett Packard Enterprise sales representative can provide additional details.

High Availability with HPE StoreEver ESL G3 Path Failover

To make the most of your library performance, the ESL G3 offers failover features:

  • For High Availability the ESL G3  Data Path and Control Path failover features are bundled together to provide both drive and robotic failover:
  • Data Path Failover:

- Both ports of the drive are physically connected but only one is active.

- Both ports are configured identically.

- If a link failure is detected on the active port, the drive automatically deactivates that link and activates the standby link using the exact same names, reservations, encryption settings, etc.

- Host may detect momentary connection loss then the drive connection recovers.

  • Control Path Failover

- The library has a virtual link through Control Path drive back to the switch.

- The library has a unique WWN and shows up on the switch as a unique device instead of as a LUN behind a drive.

- Both links share the same identity and only one is active at a time.

- When one link goes down the other is activated with the same identity as the first link.

- The host may detect a momentary link loss then the library is back at a different switch port but with the same identity.

  • LTO-7 Data and Control Path Failover: LTO-7 drive high-availability data path and control path failover capability

- LTO-7 Path Failover combines Data Path and Control Path failover, unlocking feature set with one license

  • Advanced Data Path Failover (using LTO- drives)

- SAN wide failure protection

- Both ports are connected and both are active but the driver selects between them and uses them one at a time

- If a link breaks anywhere between the host and the drive, the host side driver switches to another path and recovers outstanding commands.

- Drivers handle errors before applications see them

Dual Robot for high availability

To greatly increase HPE ESL G3 high availability, active/active dual robots are available for HW Revision 2 libraries (shipped after June, 2012)
With the purchase of a dual robot kit, a Parking Module will be included and will need to be installed to the left of the Control Module.

Bulk media import/export for significant time savings

An extended import/export station creates a logical bulk load/unload capability inside the library for faster imports and exports. A 72-media slot mailbox provides one of the largest bulk load/unload in the industry offering the ability to load or unload media without having to take the library offline or stop currently-running backup jobs (as would be required when opening the whole front door).

The library I/E Station configuration can accommodate:

  • 1 to 8 24-slot Import/Export (I/E) stations in the control module and first 7 expansion modules.
    OR
  • 1 24-slot I/E in the control module and up to 7 72-slot I/E stations in first 7 expansion modules.

HPE LTO Ultrium Technology

HPE LTO (Linear Tape Open) Ultrium Tape Drives use best of breed technology. By taking the best features from other tape technologies and combining them into a single new technology, Ultrium tape drives are in a league of their own. Inclusion of innovative features such as Adaptive Tape Speed (ATS) ensure that Ultrium drives can meet the performance and reliability demands of a library environment. LTO technology is an open industry standard format; thus data written on HPE Ultrium Tape Drives can be interchanged directly with Ultrium Tape Drives from other vendors.

Data Rate Matching

Data Rate Matching combines sophisticated buffer management with variable tape drive motor speeds to match the tape drive transfer rate to the host output. . This feature ensures that the tape drive continues to stream data regardless of the environment, and brings three big advantages:

  • It optimizes performance and maximizes overall efficiency, allowing the drive to respond immediately to any data speed changes from the host.
  • It minimizes rewinding and repositioning of the tape, significantly reducing physical wear and increasing reliability.
  • It minimizes the power requirements for the drive by reducing the number of repositions needed.
