HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor Software

Overview

HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor Software

Most IT organizations are facing tighter budgets, ever-increasing network traffic, and greater management complexity. Managing Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in today's dynamic network environments requires seamless coordination across a wide range of elements. Often, organizations end up dealing with numerous network management tools in order to provide uninterrupted services.

Although every network type has unique management requirements, most organizations face the same challenges managing these networks-such as minimizing network downtime, reducing operational expenses, managing application SLAs, and providing robust security. Several tools exist to handle these requirements for different types of networks, yet no single tool provides cohesive management across all of them.

The HPE B-series portfolio offers the HPE SAN Network Advisor Software for the management of B-series directors, routers, switches, Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) and FCoE devices. HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor includes the same level of support for management of FC SANs as its predecessor, HPE B-series Data Center Fabric Manager (DCFM), and introduces management support of 16Gb FC SANs. SAN Network Advisor offers management of data center fabrics including configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics.

HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor provides comprehensive management of data center fabrics-including configuration, monitoring, and management of all B-series Directors, Switches, and HBAs. It provides support for FC SANs with configuration, zoning, and visualization capabilities, including HBA, storage, SAN fabric, and Layer 2 switch topology views. SAN diagnostics help meet SLAs via proactive alerting and advanced SAN diagnostic capabilities, including SAN port diagnostics, bottleneck detection, and best-practices validation of SAN configurations.

SAN Network Advisor is available in three types of bundles:

  • No-charge SAN Professional: Up to 300 switch ports, 2 fabrics, B-series Fabric OS only.
  • For-charge SAN Professional Plus: Up to 2560 switch ports and 36 fabrics.
  • For-charge SAN Enterprise: Up to 15000 switch ports and 100 fabrics. This bundle is required for B-series DC SAN Backbone Director, SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Director and FICON management.

HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor provides management of multiple 4Gb, 8Gb, and 16Gb B-series Directors, Switches, and HBAs. By measuring and displaying network performance, it provides the essential functions for efficiently configuring, monitoring, and dynamic provisioning of SAN fabrics.

Migration from HPE DCFM to HPE SAN Network Advisor is easily accomplished at no extra charge and with no requirement for a license, provided the migration occurs between the same level (Professional to Professional, Professional Plus to Professional Plus or Enterprise to Enterprise). To perform the migration, follow the migration path listed in the Network Advisor SAN Installation and Migration Guide and migrate the data using the installation wizard. The DCFM license will be converted to SAN Network Advisor as part of the migration. To migrate to SAN Network Advisor 11.1.x, you must first upgrade from earlier versions of DCFM to DCFM 10.4.x, and then migrate to Network Advisor. Refer to the Network Advisor SAN Installation and Migration Guide on hpe.com for complete details. NOTE: To upgrade from one level to another (for example from DCFM Professional Plus Software to SAN Network Advisor Enterprise Software), you must first migrate from DCFM Professional Plus to SAN Network Advisor Professional Plus and then purchase and apply the SAN Network Professional Plus Upgrade.

NOTE: For customers with existing HPE DCFM support contracts, please contact your HPE representative after migration to HPE SAN Network Advisor. This will ensure an orderly transition to HPE SAN Network Advisor support without interruption.

Basic Management

HPE SAN Network Advisor Professional is a management application available at no-charge and comes with B-series SAN Switches and:

  • Allows management of up to 2 Fabric OS (FOS) fabrics (up to 300 switch ports) at a time
  • Performs group switch management beyond the scope of Web Tools
  • Does not offer management of B-series DC SAN Backbone Director, SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Director or FICON

It is targeted for SMB customers that use FOS based B-series SAN fabrics and require a management solution for smaller SANs with up to two fabrics.

SMB customers that initially start off with SAN Network Advisor Professional and have a small SAN environment may over time feel the need for expansion to a mid-range class product (SAN Network Advisor Professional Plus) or an enterprise-class product (SAN Network Advisor Enterprise) as their environments start to grow in size and complexity, and as they start to uptake more enterprise-class functionality (such as Fibre Channel Routing, FCIP, etc.). A non-disruptive upgrade path is available from SAN Network Advisor Professional to SAN Network Professional Plus or SAN Network Advisor Enterprise.

Advanced Management

HPE SAN Network Advisor Enterprise and Professional Plus are the enterprise-class products that support B-series switches. HPE SAN Network Advisor Professional Plus is designed for medium-size businesses supporting the HPE DC04 SAN Director and the HPE SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director (but not the HPE DC SAN Backbone Director or the HPE SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Director), FC switches, FCIP switches, FCR switches/Integrated Routing (IR) capabilities, FCoE/CEE switches, encryption switch and blade, and Brocade HBAs. HPE SAN Network Advisor Enterprise is designed for enterprise-class customers. It configures and manages the same switches and directors as Professional and Professional Plus, but also adds support for the HPE DC SAN Backbone Director and the HPE SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Director. HPE Network Advisor Enterprise is required to manage FICON fabrics.

SAN Network Advisor Enterprise delivers unprecedented scalability, up to 100 fabrics and 15000 switch ports, while SAN Network Advisor Professional Plus scales to 36 SAN Fabrics and 2560 switch ports.

Both offerings provide brand-new features including Adaptive Networking features for quality of service, ingress rate limiting and traffic isolation zones.

Enhanced Group Management (EGM)

Enhanced Group Management (EGM) is a FOS license that enables multi-switch operations for those switches that have EGM enabled. It helps automate operations across multiple switches to save time and streamline repetitive operations, which are typically prone to error. EGM drives consistency across fabrics, while minimizing the risk associated with potential downtime due to configuration mismatches. EGM provides streamlined troubleshooting for more effective fabric monitoring and diagnosis.

SAN Network Advisor enables EGM functionality. Customers have EGM functionality enabled within the hardware product and only need to decide which application is right for them - SAN Network Advisor Professional, Professional Plus or Enterprise.

This license is enabled by default on all 16Gb platforms, HPE DC04 SAN Director, HPE DC SAN Backbone Director and embedded platforms. The license is not included by default with the 8Gb fixed port switches.

SAN Network Advisor Features

Performance Monitoring

In order to gain a competitive advantage, organizations must meet or exceed established SLAs with their internal and external stakeholders. Network Advisor can seamlessly manage multiple network infrastructures to help optimize application performance, manage SLAs, and maximize the availability of data and networked resources. Organizations can utilize leading-edge capabilities to:

  • Proactively monitor, troubleshoot, diagnose, and provide event notification regarding critical health information at varying levels of detail
  • Configure Quality of Service (QoS) priorities to optimize the performance of applications running on physical and virtual servers
  • Collect and display performance statistics in real time and utilize historical views for proactive problem determination

For all B-series SAN switches (including 16 Gbps Fibre Channel platforms), HPE SAN Network Advisor provides detailed monitoring of port and link utilization against predefined and user-configurable thresholds to optimize network performance and maximize application availability-while also defining application QoS prioritization.

HPE SAN Network Advisor provides comprehensive management of data center fabrics, including configuration, monitoring, and management of the B-series directors, routers, switches, Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) and FCoE devices.

Flexible Management
SAN Network Advisor provides comprehensive Layer 2 configuration, with easy-to-use Data Center Bridging (DCB) interface administration, FCoE port and trunk configurations, FCoE login management, and QoS. In addition, it provides:

  • Comprehensive support for Fibre Channel SANs (including B-series 16 Gbps Fibre Channel platforms), with configuration, including SAN port diagnostics and bottleneck detection; zoning; and visualization, including end-to-end HBA, storage, SAN fabric, and Layer 2 switch topology views
  • Proactive best practices validation of SAN configurations- including on-demand or scheduled operation, customization, and "red flag" reporting-using the Policy Monitor tool

  • An intuitive interface to help manage virtualized network environments
  • The ability to edit zone information and preview its impact without affecting production fabrics
  • FICON and cascaded FICON environment configuration and management along with powerful analysis and diagnostic facilities

Zoning

Zoning Impact Analysis

SAN Network Advisor supports the concept of an "offline" Zone database, so that users can make zoning changes offline without affecting the production fabric. This feature helps SAN administrators, who receive storage provisioning requests throughout the day and want to make the configuration changes required. Typically there is a very small change window each day during which the changes can actually be pushed to the production fabric. The offline zoning feature provides precisely this ability. SAN Network Advisor compares the selected offline database with the online database to see which source devices have gained or lost access to which target devices. SAN Network Advisor provides both host-to-storage and storage-to-host connectivity views.

Multi-User Zoning

SAN Network Advisor detects when more than one user is working on the same zone set and provides a notification to these users. Users can then choose to either configure these changes serially or to continue to work in parallel. SAN Network Advisor provides a compare-merge capability when the users are ready to commit the changes. User can compare their own changes to the changes of other users to ensure that zone configurations are not accidentally overwritten. In data center environments in which zoning changes to production fabrics are constantly being made, this is an efficient collaboration tool.

Quality of Service Zoning

Quality of Service (QoS) is a feature in B-series Adaptive Networking, which enables users to set the desired QoS for applications running on both physical and virtual servers. A High QoS setting gives critical applications the required bandwidth priority, maximum availability, and optimal performance in the event of network congestion. B-series fabrics can automatically and continuously adapt to changing network dynamics to ensure that critical applications always receive high priority.

SAN Network Advisor enables configuration of QoS priorities using special zones and zoning-a paradigm that is very familiar to SAN administrators. Setting a QoS priority for an application, whether it is running on a physical or virtual server, is a simple choice from a right-click menu.

LSAN Zoning

SAN Network Advisor has several features for performing Logical SAN (LSAN) zoning that allows multiple fabrics, whether local or remote, to connect with each other without merging. Only devices that have been specifically zoned within these fabrics can communicate with each other, rather than complete unrestricted access. SAN Network Advisor consolidates LSAN zoning into the regular Zoning dialog box, but provides a different zoning scope based on the backbone fabrics that have been discovered. It displays potential zoning members based on the backbone fabric and its connected edge fabrics.

SAN Network Advisor allow LSAN zones to be created, edited, and activated in the fabric zoning scope for both backbone and edge fabrics. SAN Network Advisor topology supports comprehensive Meta SAN features, which include visualization of the backbone and edge fabrics and display of Inter-Fabric Links (IFLs) in the topology.

Configuration Management

Configuration management features provide several benefits, for example, if a switch that had been performing successfully until just a few minutes ago is suspected to be "misbehaving" due to an accidental configuration, it can quickly be restored to the "last known good configuration." Similarly, a user can remove a switch whose lease has expired and replace it with a new switch of the same model without having to manually reconfigure the new switch; it can be provisioned through HPE SAN Network Advisor. An enterprise may have global corporate standards for switch configuration and requirements. With HPE SAN Network Advisor, ensuring configuration consistency is easy: replications can be configured from a "golden master" switch to all other switches.

Step 2 - Additional B-Series Supported Software Options

SAN Switch Power Pack+ Bundle

Includes bundled license for Fabric Vision, ISL Trunking, Advanced Performance Monitor, Extended Fabric and Fabric Watch.

Fabric Vision

Fabric Vision offers innovative diagnostic, monitoring and management capabilities to help accelerate new application deployments, address SAN problems before they impact operations and reduce operational costs. It Includes

  • Monitoring and Alerting Policy Suite: A policy-based monitoring tool with pre-built rules and automation that simplifies fabric-wide threshold configuration and monitoring.
  • Flow Vision: A comprehensive tool that enables administrators to identify, monitor, and analyze specific application data flows without using taps to ensure optimized performance
  • Health and performance dashboard: A single customizable screen displayed in HPE SAN Network Advisor that contains all critical SAN information for convenient review and analysis

Fabric Vision will be included by default in all HPE StoreFabric B-series Fibre Channel switches and Directors bundled with Power Pack+ (with FOS 7.2.0a and later). In all other cases, Fabric Vision can be enabled on HPE StoreFabric B-series Fibre Channel switches and Directors in any one of the following ways

  • Application of the appropriate Fabric Vision LTU (FOS 7.2.0a and later)
  • Application of the Power Pack+ LTU (FOS 7.2.0a and later)
  • Upgrading existing Switch/Director loaded with Power Pack+ to FOS 7.2.0a or later
  • Upgrading existing Switch/Director loaded with both Advanced Performance Monitor (APM) and Fabric Watch (FW) licenses to FOS 7.2.0a or later

Fabric Watch

Fabric Watch enables each switch to monitor the SAN for potential faults-and automatically alert network managers to problems before they become failures. Fabric Watch tracks a variety of SAN fabric elements, events, and counters. Monitoring fabric-wide events, ports, SFPs, and environmental parameters permits early fault detection and isolation as well as performance measurement. Each switch in the SAN needs its' own Fabric Watch license.

NOTE: Fabric Watch has been obsoleted in FOS 7.4.0 and later. Users can migrate their Fabric Watch settings to the Fabric Vision licensed Monitoring and Performance Suite (MAPS) prior to upgrading.

ISL Trunking

High performance enhanced trunking: Optional license logically groups up to eight E-ports to provide a high bandwidth trunk between two switches. Each switch needs its own license. The switch operating system views the trunk as a single, high bandwidth resource (up to 128 Gb) when routing connections between 16Gb switches. Connections are load-balanced across the individual links, which comprise the logical trunk group.

Advanced Performance Monitoring

This enabling technology provides the ability to monitor and watch specific fabric metrics from a SID (Source ID) to a DID (Destination ID), creating a method to be able to fine-tune and scale your fabric more efficiently. Performance Monitoring also allows the ability to have an early warning detection of hot-spots within the fabric providing a powerful tool for maintaining overall balanced performance.

NOTE: Advanced Performance Monitoring has been obsoleted in FOS 7.4.0 and later. Users can utilize the Fabric Vision licensed Flow Vision features for performance monitoring.

Extended Fabric

Extends all of the scalability, reliability, and performance benefits of Fibre Channel Storage Area Networks (SANs) beyond the native 10 km distance specified by the Fibre Channel standard.

Adaptive Networking

Adaptive Networking (AN) is a family of technologies which allow flexible control of traffic movement within the fabric which deliver application aware management of fabric resources. Applications may be used with multiple protocols and multiple classes of service. It includes the following features:

Ingress Rate Limiting:

Allows the ingress bandwidth of a port to be throttled to a rate lower than negotiated with the SAN node. This could be very useful for enterprises offering stepped levels of service and enforcing SLAs.

Quality of Service (QoS):

Enables zones with high, medium, and low priorities within a fabric on a zone by zone basis. This can be very useful for prioritizing array replication over MANs and WANs over less critical traffic.

Traffic Isolation Zones:

Defines paths through a fabric for some or all nodes. Failover allows a non-preferred path to be used if the preferred fails. TIZs use failover by default but it can be disabled if traffic should stop if a preferred path fails. TIZ can be used to manually map out traffic flows within a fabric based on application, priority, and topology.

Server Application Optimization

SAO optimizes overall application performance for physical servers and virtual machines. SAO, when deployed with B-Series Fibre Channel HBAs, extends B-Series Adaptive Networking from the B-series SAN fabric to the server infrastructure. This delivers application-level, fine-grain Quality of Service (QoS) management to the HBAs and related server applications.

Solution Requirements:

SAO requires B-series HBA installed in the server
