HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen11 Overview
HPE ProLiant Gen11 servers with AMD EPYC processors bring a new level of compute efficiency, performance, security features, and manageability, ideally suited for AI workloads. As AI workloads become strategic, enterprises must rely on compute and storage resources that can efficiently train, validate, and deploy models for inferencing, accommodating the mixed workload characteristics common with AI. While early machine learning was only somewhat dependent on high performance systems, the introduction of GenAI and LLM have increased the importance of delivering higher throughput, IOPs, metadata performance, as well as lower latency critical for inferencing.
| ||
When compared with the previous generation of HPE ProLiant servers, HPE ProLiant Gen11 servers meet this challenge. With a new generation of AMD EPYC processors that support high frequency and higher core counts to run a greater number of parallel processes without sacrificing performance. DDR5 memory supplements this by offering increased bandwidth combined with greater capacity, boosting performance and density even more. The new PCI Express 5.0 (PCIe 5.0) bus enables server components to achieve an unprecedented performance level by doubling data transfer rates and the number of lanes. The HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen11 is a very cost competitive 1U 1P solution that delivers exceptional value balancing compute, memory and network bandwidth at 1P economics. The ProLiant DL325 Gen11 supports 4th Generation AMD EPYCTM Scalable Processors with up to 128 cores, DDR5 memory at up to 4800 MT/s, 12 DIMM channels per processor, PCIe Gen5 with up to 128 lanes per socket, EDSFF drives, and up to 2200 W power supplies. |
WEKA's Distributed Data Protection Option
Data protection is the key to building a scalable storage system. Without the appropriate protection schema file systems will have to be limited in size to accommodate the rebuild time window and data exposure risk. Popular data protection schemes that deliver on scalability hurt performance while the performance schemes hurt scalability. The design philosophy of WEKA was to create a software solution that has the performance of an all-flash array with the scalability and economics of the cloud. This required devising a new coding scheme that would solve the problems inherent in RAID, EC, and replication. RAID cannot scale, EC has poor small file IO performance, and replication is both expensive at scale and has poor throughput. The resulting solution from WekaIO is a patented distributed data protection scheme that is faster than replication, has minimal capacity overhead, and can scale to billions of files. WEKA Data Protection Option and Data Tiering Option are licenses that enable use of tiering to S3 object storage. DTO is less expensive - but unlike Data Protection Option, does not include snapshot to object. In most instances customers choose WEKA Data Protection, which Data Tiering is a subset functionality. Data Protection Licenses are offered for Commercial, Federal and Public Sector, with duration of 1, 3, 5 years, along with co-terms. With WEKA v4.4 onwards, WEKA requires that customers who wish to use the Data Protection Option minimally have the equivalent of 1.5x capacity of their NVMe cluster in S3 object storage. |
WEKA's Data Tiering
| |
WEKA can efficiently store hundreds of petabytes of data in object storage while keeping the most recent version of the working set of data needed for data-hungry applications in NVMe storage. It leverages tiering technology to efficiently and optimally place data in NVMe storage to drive high performance when applications need it. NeuralMesh by WEKA is a single hybrid system with a fully distributed parallel file system with inbuilt tiering at its core. It combines commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) NVMe Flash with object storage in a single namespace to provide both high performance and low latency for multiple workloads through different protocols such as POSIX, GPU Direct Storage, NFS, SMB, and S3 allowing access to all of the data through all of these protocols. With WEKA v4.4 onwards, WEKA requires that customers who wish to use the Data Tiering Option have a minimum of 4PB NVMe across 19+ nodes with 16PB usable capacity in object storage. This is to maximize hardware efficiency and ensure high performance.
| |
Notes: WEKA subscriptions are sold based on usable capacity, with a license required for every 1TB of usable capacity. Usable capacity may be calculated by simply entering raw capacity into the WEKA Sizer https://hpe.sizer.weka.io

HPE Solutions with WEKA Ordering rules
HPE Solutions with WEKA Cluster Size The minimum cluster size required for a flash tier is 8 x Alletra 4210, Alletra 4110 EDSFF, DL325 Gen11, or DL345 Gen11 servers and the maximum is a combined count of servers and client hosts of 3,275. This optimizes data protection and performance through recovery operations. Each node in the cluster requires a minimum of 6 drives. Notes: Sizing for storage servers should be tailored to the specific workload requirement. Bandwidth, IOPS, data protection strategy and average file size should be taken into account for optimal configuration. As such it is recommended that you engage with your Hewlett Packard Enterprise representative to document your individual solution needs and design an environment with required services to deploy. |
Validated WEKA configurations may include the following HPE servers:
The ProLiant DL345 Gen11 (S2S57A) is qualified, but is no longer a preferred, standard server for HPE Solutions with WEKA. Notes: - A minimum of six and maximum of twenty EDSFF drives is supported per Alletra 4210. - A minimum of six and maximum of sixteen EDSFF drives is supported per Alletra 4110. - A minimum of six and maximum of twenty EDSFF drives is supported per ProLiant DL325 EDSFF. - A minimum of two and maximum of twenty EDSFF drives is supported per ProLiant DL345 EDSFF. - For any of these respective systems, each node within a cluster must be configured with the same number and type of drives. Nodes within a cluster containing fewer than the maximum number of NVMe drives can be upgraded with add-on NVMe drives, up to the limit per server type, to increase cluster storage capacity. A cluster can be expanded with additional nodes. After a cluster capacity expansion of add-on drives to existing nodes and/or additional nodes, each node within a cluster must be configured with the same number and capacity drives. It is recommended but not required, that spare drive bundles be ordered to reduce any potential down time; minimum of one drive bundle for each drive type installed, scaling at 1 spare bundle per 40 drives installed.
