Chef Automate is powered by three open source engines: Chef, Habitat and InSpec.

Chef is the engine for infrastructure automation. When you describe your infrastructure as code, it's versionable, human-readable, and testable. If you're moving applications to the cloud, Chef makes your adoption path not just smooth but fast. Migrate workloads quickly, consistently and at a pace that suits your business needs. 

Habitat is automation that focuses on the application instead of the environment that runs it. Your apps will behave consistently in VMs, containers, PaaS and bare metal. Habitat allows you to manage containers that run in a production environment and it's also a great way to reclaim your legacy applications. Package them with Habitat and they'll run anywhere without any rewrite required.

InSpec lets you specify compliance and security requirements as code. Integrate compliance and security requirements into your automated deployment pipeline. Test large-scale environments while still moving at velocity. Unlike other compliance products, InSpec is easy to read and to write. Any team member or auditor can quickly understand your tests. Use InSpec with data and APIs as well as servers.
