HPE High Performance Computing Software: Adaptive Computing Moab HPC Suite The Adaptive Computing Moab HPC Suite is a workload and resource orchestration platform that automates the scheduling, managing, monitoring, and reporting of HPC workloads on massive scale. The patented Moab intelligence engine uses multi-dimensional policies and advanced future modeling to optimize workload start and run times on diverse resources. These policies balance high utilization and throughput goals with competing workload priorities and SLA requirements, thereby accomplishing more work in less time and in the right priority order. Moab HPC Suite optimizes the value and usability of high performance computing (HPC) systems while reducing management cost and complexity. Moab HPC Suite also includes the following features and corresponding benefits:

Distribution Media and Software Documentation |
Adaptive Computing Moab HPC Suite is available for download. Customers will receive an entitlement certificate via physical shipment. The entitlement certificate must be redeemed online in order to obtain a license key, to download the software and to register for support. Moab Workload Manager |
Moab Workload Manager is a scheduling and management system designed for clusters, grids, and on-demand/ utility computing systems. The Moab Workload Manager:
Moab Workload Manager also works with major resource management and resource monitoring tools. From hardware monitoring systems like IPMI, to provisioning systems and storage managers, Moab Workload Manager takes advantage of domain expertise to allow these systems to do what they do best-importing their state information and providing them with the information necessary to do their job well. Moab Workload Manager uses its global information to coordinate the activities of both resources and services, which optimizes overall performance in-line with high-level mission objectives. There are other systems that provide batch management; however, Moab Workload Manager is unique in many respects. Moab Workload Manager matches jobs to nodes, dynamically reprovisions nodes to satisfy workloads, and dynamically modifies workloads to better take advantage of available nodes. Moab Workload Manager allows sites to fully visualize cluster and user behavior. It can integrate and orchestrate resource monitors, databases, identity managers, license managers, networks, and storage systems, thus providing a cohesive view of the cluster-a cluster that fully acts and responds according to site mission objectives. Moab Workload Manager can dynamically adjust to meet specific job needs. It can create real and virtual clusters on demand and from scratch that are custom-tailored to a specific request. Moab Workload Manager can integrate visualization services, web farms, and application servers. It can also create powerful grids of disparate clusters. Moab Workload Manager maintains complete accounting and auditing records, exporting this data to information services on command, even providing professional billing statements to cover all used resources and services. Moab Workload Manager provides user- and application-centric web portals and powerful graphical tools for monitoring and controlling every conceivable aspect of a cluster's objectives, performance, workload and usage. Moab Workload Manager is unique in its ability to deliver a powerful-user centric cluster will little effort. Its design is focused on return on investment, better use of resources, increased user effectiveness, and reduced staffing requirements.

Moab Accounting Manager |
Moab Accounting Manager was designed to be used in technical computing environments for usage tracking, charge accounting and allocation enforcement. Usage tracking involves resource usage in customizable usage records. Charge accounting involves calculating and recording charges for usage for invoicing or cost tracking. Allocation enforcement involves establishing limits on the use of system resources by defining separate funds having limited debit or credit balances.
The use of resources by a job or reservation may result in a usage record. The usage record tracks the resources that were used, whom they were used by, and (optionally) how much the usage cost.
With Moab Accounting Manager, it is possible to allocate resources credits to various parties. This is done by associating a cost for the usage by deciding on currency unit (generally referred to as credits), whether based on a real currency such as dollars, or a reference currency such as billing units or processor seconds. Next, the user will define charge rates in this currency for components of usage (consumable resource costs, multipliers and fees). Users may create pools of funds called allocations via deposits that can be debit- or credit-based, finite or infinite, and limited to a timeframe in which they can be used. These allocations are deposited into logical containers called funds which have constraints that distinguish the conditions under which the funds can be used.
Moab Workload Manager interacts with Moab Accounting Manager to ensure sufficient funds and to track and charge for usage. A typical usage pattern might be as follows. When a job is submitted, a quote is obtained to see how much it will cost and to verify that the user has sufficient funds. When it is time for the job to start, a lien (or hold) is placed against the user's funds for the amount of the requested resources. When the job ends, the appropriate fund is debited and the lien is removed. A usage record is updated with the charge amount and job usage details. The actual composition of the interactions is very flexible and will be defined by the accounting mode and interaction methods.

Moab Web Services |
Moab Web Services enables programmatic interaction with Moab Workload Manager via a RESTful interface. Moab Web Services allows users to create and interact with Moab objects and properties such as jobs, nodes, virtual machines, and reservations. Moab Web Services is the preferred method for those wishing to create custom interfaces for Moab HPC Suite and is the primary method by which Moab Viewpoint communicates with the Moab Workload Manager. Moab Web Services communicates with the Moab Workload Manager server using the same wire protocol as the Moab command line interface (CLI). By publishing a standard interface into Moab's intelligence, Moab Web Services significantly reduces the amount of wor required to integrate Moab Workload Manager into your solution.

Moab Insight |
Moab Insight is an an optional component of the Moab HPC Suite, Enterprise or Basic Edition, that lets you create, analyze, and report dashboards that represent the current and historical state of your cluster. It collects the data that Moab Workload Manager emits on its message queue. The message queue is efficient and reliable and gracefully tolerates disconnections or restarts on either side.
Users should install Moab Insight to (1) use Moab Viewpoint or (2) run reports and analyze events within the cluster using standard relationsal database tools such as Crystal Reports.
The Moab software produces a large, coherent snapshot of its object model at the end of each scheduling iteration and event-based updates as they occur. For example, whenever a job starts or finishes. Moab Insight constantly collects this data and writes it to the database. In the background, it runs an archiver. Every so often, the archiver takes a sample of the current state of the cluster and copies it to historical tables. Moab Insight periodically prunes the database to eliminate data that has become stale or expired. When Moab and Insight experience periods of disconnection for any reason, the software uses a buffer to temporarily save that data. Users can configure the sampling, pruning, and the buffer to suit the needs of your environment.

Moab Viewpoint |
Moab Viewpoint is a web application that, interacting with Moab Workload Manager, lets users manage jobs and resources without the complexities of maintaining Moab via the command line. Moab Viewpoint uses a customizable portal that enables users to view and configure jobs, as well as view compute node resources, principals and roles. The included permissions allow system administrators to specify which pages, tools, and settings certain users or groups are permitted to use, manage, and view.

Torque |
Torque provides control over batch jobs and distributed computing resources. It is an advanced open-source product based on the original Portable Batch System (PBS) product. Torque has a built-in scheduler, pbs_sched, but is typically used solely as a resource manager with Moab Workload Manager. Resource managers provide the low-level functionality to start, hold, cancel, and monitor jobs. Without these capabilities, a scheduler alone cannot control jobs. Torque provides the following features and corresponding benefits:

o Extended query interface providing the scheduler with additional and more accurate information o Extended control interface allowing the scheduler increased control over job behavior and attributes o Allows the collection of statistics for completed jobs
