HPE Cleversafe dsNet Object Storage Software for ProLiant Servers: технические характеристики и документация

В архиве
Cleversafe dsNet Object Storage Software for HPE ProLiant Servers

Overview

Cleversafe dsNet® Object Storage Software for HPE ProLiant Servers

Organizations that are using traditional storage systems are now unable to store greater amounts of data cost-effectively without compromising on reliability, availability or security. Enterprises are being forced to look beyond traditional approaches to infrastructure. Object storage is a new model of data storage, optimized for unstructured data and archival storage. Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Cleversafe have collaborated to offer a comprehensive and cost-effective object storage solution to address growing unstructured data storage challenges across a wide range of use cases including the following:

  • Active archive
  • Backup
  • Content storage and distribution
  • Sharing and collaboration
  • Application data repository

Cleversafe's dsNet® software uses patented information dispersal algorithms (IDA) to store unstructured objects at petabyte scale and beyond, at significantly lower cost than traditional storage systems. This is possible because the dsNet IDA uses erasure coding rather than replication to meet data storage reliability and availability requirements.

Together, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Cleversafe provide an object storage solution that enables massive scalability while lowering TCO and reducing the complexity of managing petabyte-scale storage. This solution delivers lower costs when initially deployed while offering the scalability necessary to ensure that an organization experiencing rapid growth in unstructured data will not outgrow the capacity of the storage infrastructure.

Key Features

Availability and Reliability

  • High levels of reliability and availability without RAID and without replication provides significantly lower cost by reducing the amount of raw storage needed per usable PB of capacity.
  • Using RAID and triple replication could require raw storage capacity equal to 3.6X the usable capacity. Cleversafe's information dispersal based solution provides levels of reliability equivalent to making three copies, but in many cases at storage capacities between 1.3X and 1.8X the usable capacity.
  • Information dispersal protects data against disk, server, rack, and site failure - all based purely on erasure coding with no need for extra data replication.
  • Proven and mature implementation of multiple site, geographically distributed, information dispersal provides site level fault tolerance without the high cost (in terms of raw storage required) of approaches based on replication.
  • Ability to control the tradeoff between reliability, availability, and cost by setting the IDA parameters for each logical storage container (i.e. vault) on your dsNet.
  • Multiple level data integrity checking protects data from silent corruption at scale.
  • Disk Lifecycle Management (DLM) proactively predicts disk failures and quarantines misbehaving drives allowing data to be migrated before a drive fails and reduces the need to rebuild data after a drive fails.
  • Software upgrades, capacity expansion, disk replacement, and entire system moves can be done without storage system downtime or interruption.
  • Missing or corrupt data is automatically detected and repaired as a background task.

Scalability

  • Single global namespace provided for any size dsNet.
  • Object store capacity can be easily expanded by adding more disks or additional server nodes to the configuration.
  • The process of adding storage and servers is simple and non-disruptive to the object store, allowing the current storage capacity to be expanded as needs arise - no forklift upgrades.
  • No centralized metadata server.
  • By automatically detecting and quarantining misbehaving drives, the dsNet minimizes the requirement for daily intervention enabling PBs of storage to be maintained by less than one full time employee (FTE).
  • High density SL4540 storage provides the efficient rack utilization required for large scale storage.
  • Separation of incidents from events makes it easy for operations staff to identify and resolve the critical issues in a dsNet at any scale.
  • Unlike replication-based approaches, which require more copies of data as usable capacity increases, in a dsNet, larger capacity leads to an IDA that has less overhead.
  • Performance scales with the capacity of the system.

Comprehensive Storage System Management

  • The dsNet Manager provides full support for dsNet configuration, health and performance monitoring, reporting, and upgrade orchestration.
  • Manager functions are available via both a Web UI and a set of APIs that can be used to programmatically manage the dsNet from another application.
  • Integration with standard management infrastructure including SNMP and syslog.
  • Upgrade the Cleversafe appliance software (ClevOS), add capacity, or retire and replace storage nodes with no downtime.
  • With a single copy of data able to provide 15 9s of reliability or more, there is no need for replication, mirroring or failover/failback, eliminating complex management tasks and additional cost required by other solutions.
  • Role Based Access Control limits access to Management functions to authorized personnel.

Performance

  • Dynamic management of the number of WAN connections to better utilize available bandwidth than native TCP/IP in geographically dispersed deployments.
  • Detects and automatically routes around any limping hardware so that system performance is not impacted by a single storage node that is performing poorly.
  • Performance optimized libraries are used in order to maximize performance of hashing, erasure coding, encryption, and memory allocation operations.

Flexible Application Integration

  • Cleversafe dsNet supports the most common object storage interfaces - Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift - easing integration with most existing cloud storage applications.
  • Cleversafe supports a RESTful Simple Object API for home-grown application integration.
  • Traditional file-based interfaces (CIFS/NFS) are provided by several 3rd party gateway partner products, many optimized for specific performance requirements and use cases.
  • Third party backup, sync and share, and other applications are available pre-integrated with the dsNet.

Security

  • SecureSlice® encryption combines AES-256 encryption and information dispersal to protect data at rest without the need for external key management to protect confidentiality in the face of multiple compromises and breaches.
  • TLS/SSL supported on network connection for data in motion encryption
  • AD, LDAP, PKI, and AWS style authentication options
  • Role Based Access Control (RBAC) for management interfaces
  • Certificate Authority (CA) based authentication required to add new devices to a dsNet

Hardware Efficiencies

  • Flexible IO Bay - Storage controller and network interfaces are contained within each compute node's IO bay. 10GbE and 1GbE networking options ensure support for industry standard network infrastructures.
  • Power Management - The SL Advanced Power Manager provides dynamic power capping and asset management features that are standard across the HPE ProLiant SL line. The converged SL4540 chassis also yields power savings via shared cooling and power resources.
  • HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) - HPE iLO is an industry-leading embedded monitoring solution. iLO's agentless management, diagnostic tools, and remote support allow for entire data centers to be managed with ease.
  • Density - With 4TB drives, a single SL4540 chassis can support up to 240TB raw capacity at a size of just 4.3U. With 6TB drives, that increases to 360TB raw capacity.  As a result, nine SL4540 chassis within a 42U rack can support 2.16PB of raw capacity using 4TB drives or 3.24PB of raw capacity using 6TB drives.

Information Dispersal Algorithms (IDAs)

Cleversafe's technology virtualizes and transforms data into a number of slices, using erasure coding based Information Dispersal Algorithms (IDA) such that a subset of the slices can be used to recreate the original data. These slices are then stored across multiple storage appliances-also referred to as storage nodes. The Information Dispersal Algorithms create slices using a high-performance variant of Reed Solomon erasure coding.

Slices are designed so that the original data can be recreated bit-perfectly if-and only if- a pre-defined subset (referred to as the threshold) of the original number of slices (referred to as width) is retrieved. Using SecureSlice encryption makes each slice completely useless as a source of information from the object it has been derived from making individual slices inherently private and secure.

Erasure Coding

Erasure coding is a method of data protection where data is transformed into a number of individual slices that provide a specified level of redundancy at the slice level such that the original data can be completely recovered from a subset of the created slices

Metadata

Management

Object storage allows the storage of arbitrary-sized “objects” using a flat container format where each object can be tagged with its own metadata.

Unmatched Organizational Efficiencies

With no RAID or replication, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Cleversafe's object storage solution can save organizations up to 65% with significant efficiencies in power consumption, floor space and administrative head count. Object storage solutions are targeted for workloads that benefit from capacity optimized storage and are typically not focused on Tier 1 storage applications requiring very high IOPS or very low IO latencies. The ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 server solution optimizes the storage-to-compute ratio to match object storage workloads, resulting in optimal price per gigabyte and price/performance ratios.

Monitoring

When managing the object storage software, the Cleversafe dsNet Manager serves many purposes beyond Vault creation and Slicestor authentication. Fault reporting of storage and hardware components ensures that administrators are aware of the state of the dsNet environment at all times. Storage device, network and CPU performance are monitored within each appliance, giving a robust snapshot of performance at all times. The dsNet Manager also provides the ability to update the ClevOS appliance software on each node in a dsNet deployment with zero system-wide downtime.

ClevOS also utilizes Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) on the hard drives within Slicestor nodes to predict drive failure. In the event of a predicted failure, data will be migrated off of the drive and onto other drives within that Slicestor to minimize rebuild times when the drive does indeed fail.

PerfectBits™

Integrity

Checks for data integrity through an intelligent background process that proactively scans and corrects errors; scans data slices for integrity and rebuilds any corrupted slices; and checks for both slice integrity and data object integrity prior to delivery. This guarantees bit-perfect data storage and delivery; assurance that data cannot be modified without authorization; detection of malicious threats; proactive detection and correction of bit errors; and discovery and correction of latent soft errors that may occur during normal read/write operations.

SmartWrite™

Uses a 3-phase commit process to protect against data corruption and does not require full width of slices to be written for a successful write to maximize performance by compensating for low performance of failure conditions within the network.

SmartRead™

Predicts the optimal network routes and storage nodes to most efficiently return data to maintain/improve performance under failure conditions within the network.

Access Methods

The underlying storage pool of a dsNet system can be shared and is jointly accessible by multiple access protocols. The dsNet system provides Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) API (Rev. 2006-03-01) and OpenStack Swift compatible interfaces. The dsNet also supports a Cleversafe defined Simple Object interface. All of these interfaces are http REST style interfaces. In addition an HDFS interface is provided with the dsNet. For applications requiring CIFS or NFS based access several third party cloud storage gateways are qualified.

Geo-Dispersal

Availability

One of the most compelling availability features of Cleversafe dsNet is its support of geo-dispersed topologies. This allows a single dsNet to be constructed from Slicestor storage nodes located in multiple geographically distributed data centers. In the event that a single data center becomes unreachable, data in the dsNet will still be available for read and write access. Cleversafe's SmartRead functionality monitors the response time and performance of individual Slicestors (and the underlying network), and distributes read requests across the dsNet to maximize system performance. Data can be reconstructed from a subset of the Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Cleversafe solution's Slicestor nodes. The dsNet Manager and Accesser nodes are also configured to eliminate a single point of failure in the solution.

SecureSlice

SecureSlice is the technology Cleversafe uses to guarantee confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data stored on a dsNet. The goal of SecureSlice is to preserve these guarantees despite multiple compromises and breaches, up to some threshold number.

SecureSlice technology combines All-or-Nothing Transform (AONT) with Information Dispersal to preserve data confidentiality and integrity in the event slices are compromised. SecureSlice technology guarantees (when enabled) that without access to a threshold number of slices, no information can be obtained. If data obfuscation is not a consideration, some increased read/write performance may be achieved by disabling this feature.

Configurable

Reliability

Through the configuration of Information Dispersal Algorithms (IDAs) data reliability can be customized to meet specific customer requirements.

The dsNet technology was designed to tolerate individual storage device failures. Slices of data are created whereas only a subset of the created slices is needed for the data to be readable. The system can be configured to survive the failure of an entire data center with no data loss and minimal impact to performance.
