HPE Insight Control delivers complete lifecycle management for HPE ProLiant and BladeSystem infrastructure. Delivered on DVD media, Insight Control software uses an integrated installer to deploy and configure HPE Systems Insight Manager (HPE SIM) and essential infrastructure management software rapidly and consistently -- reducing manual installation procedures and speeding time-to-production. A single, consistent management environment is provided for provisioning of the operating system and hardware configuration. HPE Insight Control also includes full capabilities to migrate complete servers (both physical and virtual) to new servers (both virtual and physical), with support for converting from physical-to-virtual (and vice-versa) and converting between virtualization platforms from various vendors. In addition, Insight Control provides proactive health and performance monitoring, power management, performance analysis, lights-out remote management, and virtual machine management for HPE ProLiant servers and HPE BladeSystem infrastructure. Insight Control also provides seamless single-console integration with Microsoft® System Center and VMware vCenter Server™ for users who have standardized on those management consoles.

HPE Insight Control is based on HPE Systems Insight Manager (HPE SIM) as the primary management console and includes an iLO Advanced license. HPE Insight Control runs on a Windows-based central management server (CMS) and can manage server nodes running both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Please note that the Insight Control functionality is also delivered by the newest management product of HPE OneView.

HPE OneView for Microsoft System Center (previously known as HPE Insight Control for Microsoft System Center) is offered for customers that have chosen Microsoft System Center as their primary console. Based on HPE Insight Control and HPE OneView, it adds several extensions to make the ProLiant management information available through the System Center consoles, and also adds monitoring, alerting, proactive virtual machine management, and ProLiant OS deployment and update capabilities to the System Center consoles.

HPE OneView for VMware vCenter (previously known as HPE Insight Control for VMware vCenter Server) is offered for customers that have chosen VMware vCenter Server as their primary console. Based on HPE Insight Control and HPE OneView, it adds several extensions to make the ProLiant management information available through the VMware vCenter Server console, enabling comprehensive monitoring, remote control, and power optimization directly from the vCenter console.

HPE Insight Control includes one year of 24 x 7 HPE Software Technical Support and Update Service ensuring rapid access to Hewlett Packard Enterprise support staff and proactive delivery of software updates. Electronic software license delivery is now available in most countries. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends purchasing electronic products over physical products (when available) for faster delivery and for the convenience of not tracking and managing confidential paper licenses. HPE Insight Control runs on a Windows-based central management server (CMS) and can manage server nodes running both Windows and Linux operating systems. (The server operating systems are not included and must be purchased separately.)

The purchase of Insight Control (or upgrades from Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) Advanced or Insight Control server deployment to Insight Control) includes 1 year of 24x7 Technical Support and Updates (TS&U). Upgrades to 3 or more years of TS&U are available.

When ordering Insight Control, customers will receive a license entitlement certificate via physical shipment or via email. The license entitlement certificate must be redeemed online or via fax in order to obtain the license activation key(s).

Obtaining Insight Control software

Insight Control software can be obtained in two ways. (1) as a software download from the HPE Software depot web site or (2) on the Insight Management DVD media kit.

Unified infrastructure management

HPE Insight Control, based on HPE Systems Insight Manager (HPE SIM), provides a unified, secure and extensible platform to centrally manage servers, storage, and other infrastructure devices across heterogeneous operating system environments. (For example, HPE Insight Control can manage server nodes running both Windows and Linux operating systems.)

HPE Systems Insight Manager (HPE SIM) is the clear choice for managing Hewlett Packard Enterprise servers and storage by being the easiest, simplest, and least expensive way for HPE system administrators to maximize system uptime and health.

• HPE SIM provides hardware-level management for HPE ProLiant servers, HPE Integrity servers, HPE BladeSystems; HPE MSA, HPE EVA, and HPE XP storage arrays; and HPE Networking A-series devices
• It includes device discovery, identification, and asset management. All asset information is stored in a database for systematic inventory management.
• Users can generate various reports based on formats using the latest industry standards
• Integrated with HPE Insight Remote Support Advanced, HPE SIM also provides contracts and warranty management, and automates remote support
• ProLiant and Integrity servers running Windows and Linux can automatically download the latest BIOS, driver, and agent updates. HPE SIM will also identify systems running out-of-date systems software and enable system software updates across groups of servers

Insight Control remote management
(iLO Advanced)

HPE Insight Control remote management provides a license for iLO Advanced, HPE's premier solution for comprehensive lights-out remote management capabilities for ProLiant servers. This environment-management solution includes remote access to server power control and event logs, virtual media for simple deployment and update of remote servers, high-performance virtual keyboard-virtual-mouse (KVM) for routine and emergency remote administration, and single-server power measurement and regulation.

HPE Insight Control helps distributed IT teams effectively collaborate to solve complex IT problems. The shared console capability allows up to six team members to view and share control of a single virtual KVM session. In addition "console replay" captures and saves screen video to enable review of failure sequences and easily document complex configuration administrative tasks.

Key remote management features include:

• Embedded hardware Graphical Remote Console capabilities that can turn a supported browser into a virtual desktop, giving the user full control over the display, keyboard, and mouse of the host server. The operating-system-independent console supports graphic modes that display remote host server activities (i.e. shutdown and startup operations) and works with a standard browser (without additional software) on the remote server or client system.
• USB-based Virtual Media feature allows an IT administrator to boot the remote server using a standard 1.44-MB diskette on the client machine, a DVD/CD drive or USB flash drive on the client machine, or the image of a floppy diskette or DVD/CD from anywhere on the client's network. After the remote server has booted a USB-capable operating system, the virtual device or ISO 9660 image is available as if it were a local USB device. Administrators can execute functions remotely from an applet user interface, command line, or script.
• Integration with enterprise-class directory services to provide secure, scalable, and cost effective user management. Directory services, such as Microsoft Active Directory and Novell eDirectory, can be used to authorize directory users with assigned user roles to Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) processors. With Active Directory, customers have the flexibility to integrate with or without a schema extension. An easy and reliable installation program is available to install a management console snap-in and extend customer's existing directory schema to enable directory support for the HPE lights-out management products. A directory migration tool is available to automate setup for both methods of integration. Also supports the Active Directory nested groups feature.
• Advanced user authentication with two-factor authentication via Kerberos using digital certificates embedded on smartcards or USB. Using this form of strong authentication, iLO access can be restricted to IT individuals possessing a certificate-bearing smartcard or USB and a PIN.
• Integration with Microsoft Terminal Services to provide a high-performance graphical remote console by automatically or manually switching to Microsoft Terminal Services when the operating system is fully loaded and available on the host system. When the operating system is not operational, continues to provide its secure, hardware-based Lights-Out console for end-to-end remote access to the host server. In addition, the Microsoft Terminal Services session is routed through the management network interface to improve production network security.
• Embedded wizard to guide users through initial HPE BladeSystem configuration and setup using the familiar Lights-Out interface. Configuration and installation of Lights-Out, blade server, and operating system also includes integrated activation of Virtual Media using the appropriate media. An HPE BladeSystem rack image is automatically rendered for easy point-and-click navigation between blades and enclosures within a single rack.
• Secure Shell Text Console (Textcons) provides scripting tools and an alternate remote management functionality, used mostly in Linux environments, instead of the Integrated Graphic Remote Console, for set up and deployment of servers. Textcons, takes text data from the video chip, redirecting it out over a secured network, where the user can configure their BIOS, the OS loader and the OS itself.
• Serial record and play back is taking the output data from the Remote Serial Console (Textcons) and saving it to iLO memory for the customer to access later. Very similar to "console replay ", but is text based data only from the serial port. This would be used to store logs of data and\or history of activity so a customer can retrieve it later to see exactly what activity was done - or actions occurred (Play back) but all text based. Linux customers normally use this functionality don't have monitors at remote locations so this allows them the usability to send and retrieve data remotely all don't via Remote Serial Console or virtual serial ports.
• Remote System logs iLO keeps a log of everything being done, so it can later be used for troubleshooting or simply have a record. Syslog can be configured to receive logging from a remote client, or to send logging to a remote syslog server. Remote logging is sending a duplicate record of those events not only to the local machine but to a remote machine as well for enhanced security.

Insight Control power management

HPE Insight Control power management is an integrated power monitoring and energy management application that provides centralized monitoring and control of datacenter power consumption and thermal output. Energy instrumentation connected into HPE Systems Insight Manager enables greater Unified Infrastructure Management, and is compatible with any operating system residing on the managed server. Insight Control power management provides tools to increase the capacity of your datacenter by reducing power and cooling requirements of ProLiant servers to a level which accurately reflects the workloads of your servers. Built upon ProLiant Power Regulator technology it provides performance when you need it, and cost savings when you don't.

Key power management features:

• Provides a central location where power and thermal data for tens, hundreds, or thousands of servers may be viewed and managed. Physical and power topology configurations can be easily modified through the user interface or from spreadsheets and configuration management repositories using import tools
• Limiting the server(s) power consumption to an average level, power capping can be set to minimize overall power consumption and heat output.
• Data Center Power Control allows customers to reduce their energy costs and take control of their power and cooling during catastrophic events. Customers set pre-defined rules to handle power and cooling rules. These rules act selectively on systems based on attributes and relationships to gracefully shutdown the OS or change iLO power regulator state. In addition customers can take control over their energy usage and power down non-essential servers during peak hours. Power consumption goals can be defined and rule execution conditionally stopped if the goals are achieved.
• Integration with facilities management software allows customers to do their rack and power planning using precise, actual power data instead of estimates. Information from facilities management software will be imported into Insight Control power management allowing us to provide an electrical inventory along with load data.
• Discovery of metered PDU's allowing Insight Control power management the ability to measure power consumption for a heterogeneous environment. Includes the capability to monitor leading non-HPE power distribution units (PDUs).
• Dynamic Power Capping safely limits power usage with no performance degradation and without risk to electrical infrastructure. Insight Control power management allows the setting of power caps for one or many systems at a time. For single rack servers, power caps are applied via the iLO management processor and will limit power usage to a specific Watt or BTU/hr level. For enclosures of blades, users can set an enclosure level power cap, and the Onboard Administrator will dynamically adjust individual server power caps based on their specific power requirements. Capping power usage at historical peak power usage -- instead of significantly higher face-plate, ROM burn, or power calculator default values -- allows IT organizations to fit up to 36% more servers in their existing rack infrastructure
• Power Discovery Services enables visualization of datacenter power topology via the intelligent power distribution units (iPDUs) Enables the automatic detection of wiring errors, and with automatic updates for electrical inventory when new servers are installed. Discovery capabilities have been enhanced with 'outlet control', which enables the (iPDUs) to manage each outlet where a device is plugged in -- for enhanced power monitoring with remote control from Insight Control.
• Location Discovery Services enable Insight Control power management to automatically know and display the exact location of Gen8 servers within the intelligent series rack. This provides reduced labor time, operational costs and human errors associated with inventory and asset management.
• Each power/thermal graph has an Analysis dashboard that summarizes key information for the selected server(s), rack or data centers. The data displayed includes total power consumed in kWh, the estimated costs of powering and cooling the selected server(s), and the estimated costs saved through the use of policy-management based on HPE's Power Regulator technology.
• Insight Control power management takes action to change the HPE Power Regulator settings on a single server or on multiple servers all at once. These actions may be executed immediately or scheduled to occur at a future time or on a recurring basis. Action scheduling can be used to set time-based power policies on single servers as well as collections of servers.
• Enhanced Reports communicate power and thermal information -- from individual server utilization to data-center-level summaries and analysis. Reports on under-utilized servers identify those that are power hogs, are idle but still running, or are decommissioned but not powered off.

Insight Control performance management

HPE Insight Control detects, analyzes, and explains hardware bottlenecks on HPE ProLiant servers. HPE Insight Control provides the tools you need to receive proactive notification of building bottleneck conditions, and debug existing performance issues. The performance information is analyzed to determine if there is a building or existing performance bottleneck issue. You can interactively display this information, log the information to a database for later analysis and reporting, and set up proactive notification using the HPE Systems Insight Manager notification mechanism.

Key performance management features:

• Monitors the hardware performance continuously, compares it with known performances capabilities of each component and determines, in real time, what components are experiencing performance issues.
• Creates events when the performance state of a server changes. Insight Control detects these changes early, displaying a warning before an actual bottleneck happens.
• Provides an interactive, online debugging tool that can be used in real time to understand and correct performance issues. The tool provides precise indications of what the issue is, why it is of concern, and what can be done about it. Features such as real-time performance graphing allow system administrators to decide whether an issue needs to be addressed immediately or corrective actions can wait.
• Can be configured to log server performance data. This data can later be extracted and replayed in offline analysis just as if the user was sitting in front of the server when the performance issue happened. When used in conjunction with the dynamic performance graphing and altering features, administrators can determine if an off-hours performance issue needs to be addressed immediately or corrective steps can be put off until normal business hours.
• Analyzes the configuration of server components and determines if the server configuration contains potentially problematic configurations. Potential issues such as PCI bus imbalance, SCSI drives operating at reduced speed, and inactive network ports are detected and reported.
• Supplies a summary report that shows the percentage of time the server was in a bottleneck state or near-bottleneck state and overall performance utilization for a system broken down by its subsystems combined with a complete inventory report of that server.
• Supports performance monitoring and analyses of select MSA shared storage devices. This functionality provides full drill-down capabilities from a server to attached shared storage devices, and from there "drill-up" to the attached servers.

Insight Control server migration

HPE Insight Control makes it easy to upgrade or replace your existing server, or to implement virtualization. HPE Insight Control enables you to replicate your well-functioning, but under-performing or over-provisioned server to a new physical or virtual server in an automated, accurate and affordable way.

Key server migration features:

• Perform Physical-to-ProLiant (P2P), Virtual-to-ProLiant (V2P), Physical-to-Virtual (P2V), or Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V) migrations from a single integrated user interface
• An unlimited number of server migrations is allowed.
• Supports Migrations from any x86/x64 server regardless of vendor to the latest HPE ProLiant or BladeSystem server technologies
• Source can be any x86/x64 server with a supported OS or a supported VM-type
• Destination can be a supported HPE ProLiant or BladeSystem server or a supported virtual machine
• Heterogeneous virtualization platform support enables Ability to migrate between virtualization platform, such as VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V.
• Supports server migrations across FibreChannel over Ethernet (FCoE) and iSCSI environments, and across Linux SAN environments.
• Automates the migration of the OS, application, and data from an existing physical server or virtual machine to a new ProLiant server or virtual machine. Manual steps required to do the migration are eliminated. Automatically install the latest PSP when migrating to a ProLiant server (P2ProLiant or V2ProLiant).
• The extremely intuitive user interface enables consistent migrations without prior training.
• The source server is always available just the way it was running before the migration since no additional drivers are installed on the source server. No modification to the source server ensures a consistent image between source and destination.
• Having no source device driver dependency enables the migration of any x86/x64 source server running a supported operating system.
• Match availability of drive space on the destination server by excluding drives and partitions and/or resizing NTFS partitions during the migration. The size of the NTFS partitions may be increased or decreased.
• Tried and tested with the correct destination device drivers for all supported destination servers.
  NOTE: Before migrating, check and make sure all licenses may be legally transferred to the destination server.
• Support for migrations in a SAN environment when migrating to HPE BladeSystem c-Class, including migrating servers from direct attach storage to boot from SAN.

Insight Control virtual machine management

The HPE Insight Control significantly extends HPE Systems Insight Manager (HPE SIM) capabilities to manage virtual machines. HPE Insight Control seamlessly merges hardware and heterogeneous virtualization management of VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Xen (on RHEL & SLES environments) virtual machines.

Insight Control enables you to get the most out of a unified physical and virtual server infrastructure. Insight Control offers an out-of-the-box solution that can receive a predictive failure alert and automatically evacuate all VMs from a VMware ESX host server by initiating VMware DRS. VMware ESXi 5 environments also support lockdown/non-lockdown modes, autoboot, and stateless/stateful modes. Lockdown mode provides for increased security of ESXi hosts.

Key virtual machine management features:

• Provides associations between virtual machines and physical host and integration into a single console and enables all tasks to be run from the Insight Control console, leveraging existing discovery, identification and notification processes.
• Provides control functions for virtual machines in VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Xen on RHEL & SLES from a central console that allows users to manage virtual machines in a consistent manner irrespective of virtualization layer.
• Provides start, stop, pause, reset, move, copy, backup, create template and restore functions for VMs remotely from the Insight Control console.
• Flexible move capabilities allow multiple usage scenarios. In high-availability situations that do not allow service interruptions, Live Move (initiate VMware vMotion technology from Insight Control - requires VMware vCenter) can be used (for VMware ESX hosts only). Where flexibility is required to execute fast moves between dissimilar host hardware, SAN-based fast move can be enabled (VMware ESX hosts only).
  In high-availability situations, quick move capabilities can be used for Microsoft Hyper-V (MSCS clusters only).
  Where the VM Host is not connected to a SAN, a file-copy move can be used.
• Make informed decisions on workload optimization with "at a glance" single view of virtual machine and associated host server performance. Set usage thresholds for CPU, memory, and disk usage and proactively receive alerts in SIM when thresholds are exceeded and take corrective action.
• Automatically respond to predictive hardware failures on VMware ESX host servers by relocating VMs before a server fails, reducing downtime.
• Launch VMware vCenter or Microsoft System Centre Virtual Machine Manager from Insight Control to perform tasks as needed. View VMware ESX host cluster and resource pool properties from VMware vCenter in the Insight Control console.
• Collect events from VMware ESX and VMware vCenter to use HPE Insight Control as your central event consolidation and alerting tool.
• Enables the safe and orderly shutdown of VMware ESX hosts when the VMware's DPM has freed up a VMware ESX host to shut down for power saving purposes. Insight Control communicates with VMware vCenter (and DPM) and will prevent HPE SIM from setting the host status to "critical".

Extensions for Microsoft System Center

HPE Insight Control and HPE OneView integrate with Microsoft System Center Server to deliver powerful Hewlett Packard Enterprise hardware management capabilities directly from the System Center consoles for comprehensive system health, configuration management, and remote control. In conjunction with HPE OneView, it also delivers robust deployment capabilities and is a key integration point for the broader portfolio of infrastructure management, service automation, and IT operations solutions available from HPE.

By integrating HPE converged management features into Microsoft System Center consoles, administrators can gain greater control of their technology environments. This provides consistency for software deployment and updates and enables a faster response in the event of server failure, reducing the risk of downtime.

This integration allows the following capabilities from the Microsoft System Center consoles:

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM)

• Visually trace and monitor your infrastructure network end-to-end, from the host to the individual network modules within your domain, delivering comprehensive management of the network and making it easy for you to review and change any HPE-specific information.
• Facilitate consistency and improve uptime with simplified driver and firmware updates via a rotating, automated workflow for Hyper-V clusters using the HPE ProLiant Updates Catalog.
• Take control by invoking HPE remote management tools (such as iLO, OA, VCM, and HPE OneView) in-context of the host you have selected, directly from the SCVMM console.
  
  

System Center Operations Manager (SCOM)

• Prevents problems from occurring by proactively monitoring and managing hardware health and intelligently responding to hardware events on servers running Windows and Linux, as well as BladeSystem enclosures and HPE Virtual Connect. A consolidated health monitoring view reflects the HPE OneView model, showing relationships between managed devices.
• Manage the health of HPE ProLiant Gen8 servers without the need for loading OS-based SNMP agents or WBEM providers. It can also be used to monitor the health of servers that do not have an OS yet loaded, as well as ProLiant Gen8 servers running any operating system that has a supported Agentless Monitoring Service (such as VMware ESXi).
• Take control by invoking HPE remote management tools (such as iLO, OA, VCM, and HPE OneView) in-context of the host you have selected, directly from the SCOM console.
  
  

System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)

• Provides quick and reliable Windows deployment to bare metal Hewlett Packard Enterprise servers.
• Ensures consistency and maximize uptime with simplified Windows driver and firmware updates using the HPE ProLiant Updates Catalog.
• Provides detailed component level inventory of every managed HPE Windows server using the HPE ProLiant Inventory Tool.

One installer now delivers both vCenter .Net Client Graphical User Interface and the New Web Client Graphical User Interface.

Over time, all capabilities of the existing .NET version will be migrated to the new web based console client.
