HPE Helion Stackato

Overview

HPE Helion Stackato

HPE Helion Stackato is an open, scalable, flexible cloud application platform and ecosystem supporting a variety of runtimes, frameworks and services. HPE Helion Stackato is based on Cloud Foundry® technology, uses Docker containers to launch applications deployed, and offers additional enterprise capabilities for developers and IT operators. HPE Helion Stackato is designed to run on many IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service), including AWS, VMware, and HPE Helion OpenStack (Azure support is coming in a future release).

HPE Helion Stackato enables customers to:

  • Accelerate development of cloud-native applications
  • Reduce cost using a common platform across development and operations
  • Focus on coding and not managing resources

Product components include:

Helion Cloud Foundry (HCF)

  • Helion Cloud Foundry (HCF) runtime is Cloud Foundry Certified, which means that the HCF runtime is at binary parity with upstream Cloud Foundry release for core components. The certification enables customers to transition more easily between vendors who have certified their products.
  • The Helion Cloud Foundry runtime provides the self-service experience for developers for versioning, rolling back, and deploying new versions of their apps.
  • We support a wide variety of popular programming languages such as Ruby, Python, Go, as well as the enterprise favourites: Java, and .NET, with .NET support being on part with Microsoft Azure support in Visual Studio

Helion Control Plane

(HCP)

  • Helion Control Plane is the underlying Helion Stackato platform service that abstracts and orchestrates deployment of cloud-native services across multiple IaaS: Helion OpenStack, vSphere, and AWS.
  • Features include: identity, centralized logging, and service workload management. HCP provides support for service instances, and guarantees that they continue to run as the resources are allocated and disposed.
  • HCP leverages Kubernetes as its container management platform and handles many of the details of running Kubernetes across multiple IaaS. HCP uses Terraform to make sure that the IaaS components required for Kubernetes to operate - from load balancing endpoints to networks to compute and storage

Helion Service Manager

  • In HPE Helion Stackato 4.0, there are three types of services:

- Managed & Provisioned by HPE Helion Stackato (just like Stackato 3.6.2 or other CF implementations)

- Provisioned by HPE Helion Stackato, but require IT Ops creds (e.g. AWS RDS, Vertica, Trove)

- "By Reference" pass thru API - services that are hosted elsewhere and show up in the Cloud Foundry marketplace.

  • With Helion Service Manager, customers can:

- Manage & Administer - IT administrators can set up and configure services from a catalog for Cloud Foundry or Code Engine developers to consume; they can provision, upgrade/patch, and manage access to these services.

- Host - single instance services of Redis, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, mongoDB, RabbitMQ.

- Connect - developers can easily connect to their desired application services, which may include HPE Software services.

Helion Code Engine

  • Helion Code Engine is a continuous integration and delivery tool designed for small, enterprise development teams who are interested in building greenfield apps on HPE Helion Stackato.
  • Based on git version control technologies, Helion Code Engine automates build, test and deploy cycles so that developers can quickly bring their ideas to life and get customer validation.
  • Includes integration with StormRunner and Slack.

Developer & Operator Experience

  • HPE Helion Stackato 4.0 provides a unified developer experience, regardless of which infrastructures their applications ultimately use to get deployed. Developers are empowered to:

- Manage cloud native applications in Cloud Foundry

- Deploy applications via Helion Code Engine

- Discover and bind services to applications

Features and Benefits

HPE Helion Stackato Benefits

HPE Helion Stackato enables developers to quickly prototype, deploy and deliver production- grade applications. For IT administrators, the PaaS is a way to easily and cost-effectively empower developers with a self-healing, highly-available, and scalable environment.

Fully-featured PaaS (Platform as a Service) for the Enterprise

Public cloud based application platforms have been delivering on the promise of development agility for the past few years. Inside the enterprise and its complex deployment environment, HPE Helion Stackato aims to fulfill the same business need of speed and innovation, within the bounds of higher control, security and privacy required in enterprise apps. HPE Helion Stackato has a full feature set that makes configuration & administration easy for IT professionals, and development & deployment simple for developers.

Flexibility

HPE Helion Stackato supports a variety of popular programming languages and databases, which means that departments with radically different requirements can all deliver apps to the market with the same ease.  Cloud apps created with the HPE Helion Stackato are more flexible - they can be easily deployed across the enterprise hybrid cloud: across deployments in the public, private or both types of clouds.

Multi-cloud deployments

Our edge in open-source technology offers a real alternative to enterprise vendor lockin. Built on open source technology such as CloudFoundry and OpenStack, cloud apps created on the HPE Helion Stackato can easily run in different deployment environments that leverage the same open source technology. In addition, apps designed for the HPE Helion Stackato platform can easily be moved across hybrid clouds.

Easy administration & configuration for IT professionals

Today's IT professionals are tasked with transforming their business from the ground up - they are handling a wide range of requirements for environments and programming languages throughout the organization. HPE Helion Stackato enables IT to facilitate the delivery of app environments in response to varied requirements and easily control & patch software to uphold enterprise security and privacy practices. The cloud platform control panel configures both underlying infrastructure and application settings.

Modern developer experience

Developers have been enjoying the ease of developing cloud apps on top of platforms build on the public cloud. However, enterprises have rarely benefited from the same advances in productivity and cost savings because they often have different security, privacy and control requirements. With the HPE Helion Stackato, those modern app development tools are now available to enterprise developers. This means that IT will be able to implement an efficient and cost-effective solution, and developers will be able to spend time and focus on what they do best: code.

Strong ecosystem

The HPE Helion Stackato benefits from the enterprise ecosystem of partner that HPE has developed over the course of many decades. And we are also eager to work with new partners to accelerate bringing the benefits of the platform across many more enterprises. Security and control while preserving IT agility

Benefit from HPE's long-running experience running some of the world's most complex and secure data centers, managing the world's most trusted workloads
