Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID)
Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a technology that combines multiple hard drives to store data. There are different methods, called RAID levels, which are used to enhance performance and provide redundancy. Essentially, RAID acts as a storage virtualization feature, allowing the operating system to treat multiple hard drives as a single unit in certain RAID levels.
Care must be taken to match not only the drive vendor, capacity, and class, but also the specific model. Drives from the same vendor, with the same capacity and class, can still have different performance characteristics for certain types of I/O operations. Therefore, matching by model ensures that the RAID volume is made up of a uniform array of drives, delivering all the benefits of RAID without the drawbacks of having lower-performing drives in the mix.
With various RAID Levels, multiple physical hard drives are used to divide and/or store data. The standard method of arranging data is also termed as level in RAID.
The types of RAID levels that are supported by Dell Pro Precision 7 R1 PW7R1260 are: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10.
RAID 0 splits or stripes data across two or more drives for faster read and write performance. It uses more space compared to other RAID types, and performance increases as the number of drives increases. However, if any drive in the array fails, all the data is lost because there is no data redundancy.
The following are the key features of RAID 0:
- Two or more drives of the same size are required for RAID 0.
- A single-drive RAID 0 volume is almost equivalent to using raw drives in JBOD mode.
- In multiple-drive RAID 0 volumes, read and write operations are shared concurrently across multiple platters and heads. Therefore, it provides better performance.
- The total volume capacity as seen by the operating system is equal to the sum of the individual-drive capacities. For example, if you use four drives of 1 TB size, you get 4 x 1 TB = 4 TB.
RAID 1, also known as the data mirroring, provides 100% redundancy for data protection. By balancing the load, read performance can be twice as that of a single drive; write performance is almost the same as a single drive. RAID 1 volumes are for operating system volumes. A disadvantage is cost, as twice as many drives are required for RAID 1.
The following are the key features of RAID 1:
- 100% duplication of data with instant failover.
- Requires two drives, preferably of the same capacity. When two different capacity drives are used, the volume size is same as the capacity of the smaller drive. For example, if you use one 1 TB drive and one 2 TB drive in a RAID 1 array, the volume size is 1 TB.
RAID 5, leverages striping in conjunction with distributed parity data, enabling the array to recover from the failure of a single disk. This configuration achieves a balance between performance, storage efficiency, and redundancy.
RAID 10, combines the features of RAID 0 and RAID 1 by mirroring and striping data across multiple disks. This hybrid configuration delivers superior performance coupled with redundancy, ensuring both speed and data protection.
